The board was cut from a single figured walnut offcut — a section of timber where the grain grew in tight, swirling, interlocked patterns instead of straight lines. The result is a surface that shifts visually as you change your angle: dark chocolate streaks against warm golden amber, with a three-dimensional depth that plain walnut simply doesn’t have. Every board cut from figured walnut is different. This grain pattern will not appear again.
What is figured walnut?
Figured grain occurs when the wood fibres grow in an irregular, interlocked pattern rather than running straight along the trunk. In walnut, this creates the dramatic dark/light contrast and swirling movement you see here — sometimes called flame, feather, or crotch figure depending on where in the tree it came from. It is found in a small fraction of any given walnut harvest and is sought after by furniture makers, luthiers, and woodworkers for exactly the visual quality it brings to this board.
The form
The paddle shape — a long rectangular body tapering into a curved neck with a round hanging hole — is one of the most practical serving board formats. The body gives you room to arrange a proper charcuterie or cheese spread. The handle makes it easy to carry to the table. The hanging hole means it can live on the wall between uses, where the grain can be appreciated as a piece of the kitchen itself.
The making
Shaping the handle neck by hand requires patience: the curve has to flow cleanly into both the body and the rounded head, and the hanging hole has to be drilled and sanded to a smooth finish inside and out. After shaping, the entire board goes through multiple stages of progressive sanding. Every board leaves the workshop pre-treated with food-grade mineral oil and sealed with a carnauba wax blend.
