Every kitchen has cutting boards. Very few have this one.
The tumbling blocks pattern on this end grain board is built from walnut, cherry, and maple — three hardwoods chosen specifically for the contrast between their tones. Dark walnut forms the shadows, warm cherry catches the light, and pale maple sits at the highlights. Together they create a 3D cube illusion that shifts as you move around it. No two boards are identical; each piece of wood brings its own grain pattern to the design.
Why end grain?
End grain is the highest standard for a working cutting board. When the knife meets the surface, it enters between the wood fibres rather than slicing across them. Those fibres spring back after each cut — which means the board resists deep marks, stays smoother for longer, and is significantly gentler on your knife edges. A well-maintained end grain board doesn’t wear out; it gets better.
The making
The tumbling blocks design demands more precision than it looks. Each of the dozens of individual pieces must be cut and aligned exactly — even a small error compounds across the pattern and breaks the illusion. After gluing, the board goes through multiple stages of flattening, sanding, and hand-finishing. Every board is pre-treated with food-grade mineral oil and sealed with a carnauba wax blend before it leaves the workshop.
Optional feet
Anodized aluminum feet with anti-slip rubber rings are available as an add-on — they lift the board off the countertop for stability and airflow.
Included
Every order ships with a jar of home-made board conditioner — a blend of food-safe mineral oil and beeswax. Apply it whenever the wood looks dry to keep the surface protected and the colours vivid.
